The Markets of Nghệ-Tĩnh, circa 1928

Here are the locations of the 172 markets in operation around the time of the Nghệ-Tĩnh Soviets. They are drawn primarily from three sources that I found at the Library of Congress, which I cannot reproduce directly because of copyright restrictions:

  • Service géographique de l’Indochine. Nghe An. Cartes économiques de l’Annam. Hanoi: Service géographique de l’Indochine, 1926.
  • Service géographique de l’Indochine. Ha Tinh. Cartes économiques de l’Annam. Hanoi: Service géographique de l’Indochine, 1926.
  • Service géographique de l’Indochine. Quang Ngai. Cartes économiques de l’Annam. Hanoi: Service géographique de l’Indochine, 1926.

But also with references from other sources that reference single markets, such as Tran Huy Lieu. Les Soviets Du Nghe-Tinh De 1930-1931 Au Viet-Nam. Hanoi: Éditions de Langues étrangères, 1960.

I also have available the periodicity of many of the markets circa 1930 from an issue of the Bulletin économique de l’Indochine, but the dates of the markets are given in a lunar, not solar, calendar. The timing of markets is very important to understanding the Nghệ-Tĩnh Soviets, so I will need to work on creating an algorithm to convert accurately lunar to solar calendars.

The positioning of these market sites is not always precise because I lack the exact location of the buildings. It would be interesting to have contemporary photographs of any of these markets that anyone would like to send along, including coordinates for the current sites and information about their relocation over time.
