Militia Posts of Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh, c. 1930

Here is a representation of the majority of the militia posts in Militia Posts of Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh in. 1930. I still haven’t located the exact position for posts at Long An Trung, Hoàng Sơn, Vạn Kim, Xóm Trong (Xóm Dat), and Phú Hong, so if anyone has an idea, please let me know, and if you know of others – permanent or temporary – also please let me know. I think there are probably about 30 more militia posts about which I don’t know yet or were temporary. The French Foreign Legion units were concentrated at Thanh Qua (now known as Thanh Chi), Phú Diền, Đô Lương, and, of course, Vinh.

These locations originate with the 1:100000 Carte de l’Indochine map series (esp. 87E&W, 88E&W, 102E&W, 103E&W, etc.), the 1:25000 Carte des Deltas de l’Annam (numbers 0 through 17, and then 95, 96, 97, 98, 100, 101, 102, 103, and 104), the Annuaire administrative of 1932, the Troyes papers (q.v.), and various archival documents.

To me, it seems that I must have missed some of the posts, because certain regions of Nghệ-Tĩnh seem under-policies . I do know, for examples, that posts existed at Chúc A in Hương Khê and near Nguyễn Trãi in Tân Kỳ District, but they had been abandoned by 1930, and they would have been at the edge of the wilderness then as well.
